Growlithe play in the tall grass. Magikarp splash about in clear lakes. Pidgey nest up in the branches of trees. The creatures that live here are unbothered. They don't realise that war is breaking out all across all across the region. They don't know that Petalburg is burning, that Sootopolis is drowning, that Mossdeep is crumbling. They don't know. They don't care. They are content to live in peace and ignorance.[break][break]

But one of these creatures is living on borrowed time. And you're here to collect.[break][break]

Scarlet comes to a halt outside the wooden gates. As you dismount, you take a look around the ranch. A little rustic for your tastes, but certainly homely. Lots of yardage, too. Wordlessly, the Winged King stands up on its hind legs, before bringing its fist down upon the gate, smashing it to splinters. It confirms what you suspected, expected, and feared - The League has domesticated him, and he has allowed it. The savage mutt has let itself be bathed and tagged and collared and tamed without so much as an attempt at struggle.[break][break]

But though they can wash rip out his claws and wash the blood from his fur, you know better.[break][break]

Like the comedian preparing for their set, you turn around, the cloak around your shoulders becoming your backstage curtain. You hack and whoop and cough and splutter, dredging up all the mucus and bile, before spitting it out. What dregs remain, you wipe from your lips with the nook of your elbow. You mutter it under your breath a few times, making sure you get the timings and the inflections just right. Then, when you're well and truly as ready as you could ever be, you turn around and step onto your stage.[break][break]

"Hah. Hahah! You're a funny fuck, aren't you? No, Volatile. I'm not here for your autograph. I'm here for your epitaph."[break][break]

Even though the moment has already passed, you revel in it anyway. But once it passes for a second time, that's it. There'll be no third, no fourth, no fifth or sixth or seventh. It's the big finale show for Matias Silph, and there'll be no more encores from the opening act. Everyone is nice and warmed up. It's time to let the games begin.[break][break]

the silence that follows is almost comical but it is the twiddling thumbs along with the dredging mucus that does it. he can't help the fit of laugh that escapes him, as brief as they may be. his laughs only grow louder and more vicious under the threat of making his last words snappy.[break][break]

"what the hell is an epitaph?"[break][break]

but he knows, despite the comedy of it all, not to underestimate this crimson stranger before him. this may very well prove to be his last fight if he isn't careful.[break][break]

matias silph has never been cautious. he is reckless by nature.[break][break]

he flicks his wrist, and just as he had done so in the dark caves of granite, he sends an earth spike bursting from the ground in an attempt to pierce their foot.[break][break]

An earthen spike does indeed shoot out from the ground, and it does indeed attempt to pierce your foot. The jagged point manages to puncture your armour, and effortlessly tears through your boot. But at the exact moment it should rob you of your leg, it falters. The point is dulled. The stalagmite cracks, shatters, and crumbles.[break][break]

In the moment after, the reason why is revealed - Your foot is no longer a foot. It is coated in layer after layer of orichalcum, ornate armour sculpted in the likeness of a hunting beast's paw. With the secret out, you idly kick off your other shoe, revealing its brother. Then, as though it were all orchestrated from the very beginning, your gauntlets come loose and fall to the ground. With a wicked grin, you raise your two hands, two sisters, two more monstrous paws made of shining metal. [break][break]

The distance between you and him is metres at the most. Closing it is trivial. Then, you aim a pair of cleaving blows towards his head, aiming to reduce his pretty little face to mincemeat.[break][break]

"NOW LET ME HEAR YOU SCREAM!"

the ground is the only thing that breaks as the earth spike proves too dull to pierce through the tough exterior of their orichalcum armor. what remains of his earth spike shatters, its pieces sinking back into the ground where they belong.[break][break]

gauntlets come loose. chaos soon follows.[break][break]

"fuck off—"[break][break]

further words are cut off by the sudden formation of an earth barrier that shatters upon impact, its integrity crumbling against cleaving blows, but it serves its purpose in creating enough space to allow matias to propel himself back. his back hits the railing of the steps, knocking the wind along with a "tch," from him.[break][break]

his hand curls into his pocket to find a magical leaf only to remember he isn't the only knight anymore. virizion is away with lam logan, likely already knee-deep in the fight.[break][break]

"i don't have time for this!"[break][break]

he doesn't have to look off to the side to notice a sparkle of help approaching. guided by drought, a solar beam fires at the stranger.[break][break]

You don't have to look at the Solar Beam, either. You've got someone to do that for you.[break][break]

The Winged King stops observing and begins acting. Absorbed light is snatched out of the air before it can ever come close to you, caught in a Dragon's Claw. Then, as though it were launching a shotput, the attack is thrown away. The Solar Beam arcs high into the air, beyond the fences of the ranch, and comes crashing down somewhere beyond the treeline. butterfree (f) illuminate - bioluminescent bait, hurricane, psychic, shadow ball, draining kiss, solar beam, moissanite beam

he does have somewhere to be—in fact, he is now relied upon by a number of people—to succeed now would be paramount to his supposed redemption arc he's set out on. this interruption cannot be anything more than a roadblock.[break][break]

but judging by how easily the solar beam is redirected, this will likely be more than that.[break][break]

though blessed by earthen powers beyond his imagination, super strength isn't one of them nor is impenetrable skin. he may never exhaust but he can still feel pain, and that makes him more mortal than his opponent.[break][break]

falling for the feint, the brazen foot connects, the force enough to thrust him through the railing and to the ground. struggling to catch his breath, he scrambles, wrist flicking up to send forth a wave of earth spikes.[break][break]

from the trees, a shadow fall is flung at the winged king, the source of the attack now revealing itself to be an illumina butterfree, salmon in color and larger than its kind.[break][break]

there's something viscerally satisfying about watching the volatile struggle, isn't there?[break][break]

yes, it feels right. like you're an avenging angel, delivering punishment for his countless crimes. matias silph's sins might've been forgiven by the church of the league, forgotten for the meagre cost of an indulgence of loyalty, but you? you are not so merciful a god. for every dead pokemon, for every lost love, for every future never to be, he will pay.[break][break]

and the worst part? all those fools, those idiots who let themselves be wronged, will hate you for it. and the best part? you couldn't care less. because this isn't even for them. this is all for you.[break][break]

he continues to struggle. earth spikes shoot up towards you, and each one is swatted away by your orichalcum claws. they are weeds, and you are the scythe which mows the lawn. it takes only a few steps to close the distance, and once you have, you thrust your talons down to pierce his chest and rip him open.[break][break]

the winged king faces an equal lack of challenge. though it is unfamiliar with the illumina phenomenon, everything else about it is trite, known, anticipated. as the shadow ball launches towards it, it responds with a shadow claw of its own. one swipe bursts the gloomy projectile as though it were and overfull bubble, while another lurches forth to catch the butterfree and slice its wings from its body.[break][break]

the earth spikes prove to be nothing but a nuisance, an annoyance so easily cleared, but it is the last spike that proves to be the needed difference. it explodes underneath his assailant with enough force to lift them in the air, moving the fatal strike of their claws to instead drag at the corner of his lips up to his cheek.[break][break]

with his face almost split open, matias slams a hand into the ground and launches himself into the air, high and far and away before crashing into a nearby tree.[break][break]

he cannot afford to call groudon out here. not when there are bigger fish to fry.[break][break]

but this is his home. his domain. help will soon come. for now, all he can do is to continue to evade; to hell with offense.[break][break]

more pokemon begin to appear, arriving in time to help butterfree contend against the winged king. kantonian pokemon make up the first wave.[break][break]
